Gluten Free in Iceland - Hótel Dyrhólaey

I have no photos of my food from our three night stay at Hótel Dyrhólaey and that is no way indicative of the food not being good. In fact, I am sad I don’t have photos of my amazing meals I had here.

First night was the Tomato soup to start, then Iceland Cod with potatoes and veggies, followed up with Icelandic Skyr with blueberries.

The soup was excellent. It was creamy and filled with fresh veggies. It even was the perfect temperature. I just wish they had some gluten free bread to soak up the end of the soup.

Then the cod...It was seriously the best fish I have ever had, EVER. It was cooked to perfection, it was flaky and tender and the flavor was just perfect. The potatoes were perfect as were the veggies. I must disclose there was also some butter involved with the fish that I am sure lent to the yumminess but really it was an amazing piece of fish.

The Skyr was creamy, thick, sweet and oh so good. I am definitely hooked on it now.

Second night was Cauliflower soup, Icelandic Pork with potatoes and veggies, followed up with chocolate caramel panna cotta.

The soup again was perfect. Creamy, thick, full of veggies and just the right temperature.

The pork was interesting. It was tasty but it reminded me so much of beef (that I am not able to eat) that I worried it was a “funny” description for Icelandic Pork and it really meant it was beef. It did turn out they had beef gravy on the pork and I did get a little off that night. I wished I had just switched to the cod.. which I did do for the last night (instead of chicken).

The panna cotta was incredible. They removed the bottom layer which apparently was like a cookie and we were left with the chocolate and caramel panna cotta. It was delicious! It was a definite tie with the Skyr.

The last night I changed my chicken to cod and I am so glad I did. There was broccoli soup and Skyr again for dessert.

The soup was perfect. Not creamy but more like broth but it was soooo good. Warm and perfect for the cold Iceland weather.

The cod was just as perfect as the first night, the sign of an amazing chef if you ask me. All the sides were just as good also. So impressed with the food at this hotel.

Lastly the Skyr was just as good as the first night too.

We were also treated to 1000 year old glacial ice for our drinks this night from our trip to Diamond Beach.

Gluten Free in Iceland - Breakfast

Breakfast in Iceland is a very European buffet. Lots of eggs, beans, deli items, fish, breads and pastries.

And it was all delicious no matter where we ate.

Grand Hotel Reykjavík had 4-5 types of eggs available: scrambled, hard boiled, fried, sunny side up, and soft boiled in addition to them making omelettes if you wanted. There were many types of Skyr to have, some sweet some not so sweet. There was gluten free cereal and all kinds of milks: cow, almond, soy, etc. Also all kinds of juice: orange, carrot, beet and so many others I honestly can’t remember. Fresh fruits of all kinds and lots of pastries although none that were gluten free that we could find.

Hotel Dohlery had many of the same options as the Grand Hotel. Just a few less egg types and they did offer gluten free bread two of the days. The fruit here though was beyond compare. There were even items I don’t know what they were. Kiwi, bananas, oranges of three types, catawaba, watermelon and as I said more that I couldn’t even identify. It was all fresh, juicy, tasty and amazing.

I had read that gluten free bread is not common and it did appear that way. I was ok not having it for the 6 days I was there and perhaps next time I would take my own or check out a store upon arrival to pick some up.

Gluten Free in Iceland - Restaurant Reykjavík

Our first dinner with the tour group was at Restaurant Reykjavík

This place is on the Find Me Gluten Free app, so I was very excited.

It is a buffet of many of the Icelandic foods. I should have asked for someone to take me around but I decided to use my intuition and go on my own. It all worked out as I did not get ill at all and I loved everything I tried.

There were so many options (well except for dessert) and I definitely did not go hungry at all.

Fresh carved turkey, potatoes, veggies, dried cod, fish stew, salmon and I went for seconds on all of it. There was even more than this offered and that was gluten free but I am a pretty picky eater - I didn’t try the whale. I think the fish stew was my favorite, of course it had lots of cheese so you really can’t go wrong.

Easily recommend this place and highly suggest asking for a chef to take you around the buffet.

Gluten Free in Iceland - Cafe Paris

I missed out on taking many food photos on this trip. I think 1) because I was always so hungry when we were eating and 2) It was always so amazing that I would forget to take a photo even after I started.

Cafe Paris - Reykjavík

Breakfast here our first morning in Iceland. We had no idea if they could accommodate gluten free as they were not on the Find Me Gluten Free app. They are now. As they easily accommodated us. All the food was fresh and incredibly delicious.

Scrambled eggs, plain potatoes made separately, bacon and fresh squeezed orange juice.

The bonus... a gluten free baguette heated up as our toast. With Icelandic butter, it was phenomenal.

I was ready to eat here again when we returned to town on our last day but we ran out of time.
I highly recommend Cafe Paris not only because their gluten free options are wonderful but it is also a beautiful establishment. Romantic and cozy.
